The Dinner Monster
A Tale of Epic Portions

Written and Illustrated by
Junder
Daddy has been trying
for many many years,
to catch the Dinner Monster
who every adult fears.
A monster that lives under
any table I eat from.
Daddy thinks it’s better
when the Dinner Monster’s
gone.

“Although Daddy sets traps
for the Dinner Monster, he can’t quite catch him. The Dinner Monster
hides under my table and only appears at mealtimes. He comes up to
steal my food but only when Daddy looks away.”
The Dinner Monster story
tells of Daddy’s attempts to capture the elusive Dinner Monster in a tale of
epic portions.

Watch out for the Dinner Monster’s
biggest challenge yet…

Story Background
The Dinner Monster was created by
Jonathan Underwood in a pub just outside Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, UK in
2009. At that time, his daughter Gracie did not want to eat her
dinner, so a game was created where Daddy would load her fork with food and
then pretend to look for a monster under the table. In the meantime,
Gracie would eat the food on the fork and when Daddy came back up, he would act
surprised to find the food had gone. Of course, to catch the Dinner
Monster, Daddy would reload the fork with more food and search again.
When Gracie’s little sister Florence
came along in 2013, the Dinner Monster was soon to follow. The
Dinner Monster still appears at our table, especially when there are vegetables
that need to be eaten.
Gracie now eats all her dinner and
Florence is getting better at eating hers.

The Character
I have been told that the Dinner
Monster has the head of an apple and body of a blackberry. The
Dinner Monster has hair shaped like forks and fork-shaped hands. All
the better to grab food quickly without being spotted! Although he
is small and has a small mouth, he can swallow an entire fork full of food in
one bite!
The Dinner Monster is not dangerous,
he’s just cheeky. He has not been caught by an adult yet!
The Author
Jonathan Underwood (Junder) lives with
his wonderful family in Bedfordshire, UK. It has taken many years of
trying to catch the Dinner Monster, along with reading many children’s stories
before finally writing his own exploits down and telling the world about the
Dinner Monster.
Jonathan has realised his dream of
writing this book. Next on the list is writing a hit Dinner Monster song
and perhaps a play? He hopes that the Dinner Monster help’s other
parents get their children to eat when sometimes it seems impossible!
The Dinner Monster is for Jonathan’s
girls.
